Convert GIF to PNG — Free, 100% Local

GIF is limited to 256 colors, and its transparency is all-or-nothing, which is why GIF edges so often look jagged. PNG supports full color and smooth alpha transparency, so converting GIF to PNG keeps the transparent background intact and gives you a file that's much easier to edit, cut out or composite later — with none of the white-fill you'd get from converting to JPG.

Note that an animated GIF produces a still image containing only the first frame. Also, conversion doesn't invent color: a picture already quantized to 256 colors in the GIF won't become full-color by saving as PNG. What PNG buys you is no further quality loss from here on, plus better transparency and compatibility.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Will my images be uploaded?

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — 100% local processing. Your images never leave your device.

Does an animated GIF keep its animation as PNG?

No. The output is a still PNG containing only the GIF's first frame. Keep the original GIF if you need the animation.

Is GIF transparency preserved in the PNG?

Yes. PNG fully supports transparency, so transparent areas of the GIF stay transparent — and PNG additionally supports the smooth semi-transparent edges GIF cannot represent.

Will the PNG have more colors than the GIF?

No. The image was already quantized to 256 colors when saved as GIF, and that lost color detail can't be recovered. PNG's value is preventing further loss and better transparency support.
